The Bayless Varsity boys soccer team had a juggernaut performance on their own turf against the Whitfield Warriors on Monday, September 11. Going into the game, most of the fans were ready for an easy win for the Bronchos, but that wasn’t the case. Whitfield put up a challenging game for our boys and the bronchos had to adjust quickly before the Warriors made a big impact.
With the Bronchos struggling defensively during the first half, the Warriors were able to get past our goalie, sophomore Jasmin Smajic, to score the first goal of the game. This resulted in a 1-0 lead for Whitfield. The first half of the game continued as the Bronchos switched their mindset, and began putting in a lot of work defensively to keep the ball away from the goal. Even with spectacular performances from the Bronchos, none of our boys were able to score and the half ended with Whitfield up 1-0.
After getting pushed and tripped by the opposing team at the start of the second half, junior Ben Mustic stepped up and buried a penalty kick. His attempt was successful and tied the game up at 1-1. With the time winding down, the audience was positive we would be going into overtime to finish the game. With about five minutes left in the game, junior Avdo Sahbaz missed his shot which turned into an amazing assist opportunity for Ben. He was able to gain control of the ball, send it into the goal, and allow Bayless to take over the lead. The Bronchos held onto the lead for the remainder of the time and went on to win the game with a score of 2-1.
Mustic says, “Going into the game, I knew it was going to be tough, I knew Whitfield was going to bring on a challenge. When I saw we weren’t making any progress on the field, I knew I had to step up.”
The Bronchos still remain undefeated with an eminent record of 9-0-1, as they continue to strive to make it to state.
